ZigBee, a low-cost, low power consumption, short-distance wireless communication technology, is designed for the low-rate wireless sensor networks. This thesis is based on the project of the National Development and Reform Commission—Node of IPv6 Wireless Sensor Networks, focusing on the routing technology of ZigBee.The first part of this article gives an overview of the research on wireless sensor networks, including the system configuration, stack architecture, character of routing protocols of the wireless sensor networks. Then the development, stack architecture, technical characters and the application of ZigBee are introduced.In the second part, based on the analysis of network configure, network topology, network formation and network address assignment mechanism of ZigBee, the routing protocols of ZigBee are analyzed deeply. The idea and the operation process of ZigBee routing are introduced in detail. After that, the performance of ZigBee routing is evaluated. Based on the module of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer and the module of IEEE 802.15.4 physical layer, the code of the network layer of the network layer of ZigBee is developed and debugged, and the network formation, the network address assignment mechanism of the routing protocols of ZigBee network are realized. The performances of ZigBee routing are analyzed deeply through the simulation. The result of the simulation indicates that the delivery rate, the end-to-end delay and the control overhead of ZigBee network can meet the system requirement well.Two energy efficiency strategy of ZigBee routing are given in the third part of this paper. One is a balanced energy consuming ZigBee routing based on the MMBCR. Its idea is that the route selection should avoid the nodes with lower energy. The other strategy is a conditional balanced energy consuming ZigBee routing. Its idea is that the path with the least hop counts should be selected when the residual energy of all nodes of ZigBee network are enough, and the protocol should avoid selecting the nodes with lower energy when the energy of the node in the network is insufficiency. The aim of these strategies is balancing energy consuming of the network, and extending the life of the network. The result of simulation indicates that the conditional balanced energy consuming ZigBee routing postpones the network partition and extends the life of the network without sacrificing the other performance.The last part of this paper presents two strategies in order to reduce the control overhead of ZigBee routing.
