While we step into an information era in the new century, the science and technology changes with each passing day and the knowledge renews more and more quickly. The concept of learning society and lifelong learning is gradually accepted by ordinary people. Web-based learning, as a new approach that alters the traditional learning and enables everyone to learn in any place and at any time is formally on the stage. The development of learning resources and support system for web-based learning has become a social hotspot. Since the Ministry of Education started the new century web course construction project in 1999, many net colleges and leading universities set up their web-based learning systems; numerous professors, scholars and teachers also invest their researches on web-based learning. On the basis of vast literature searching, the author puts forward that the key to web-based learning is the development of self-directed web courses and the key to develop self-directed web courses is: abundant learning resources, good communication mechanism and effective learning evaluation.After detailed analysis of current research situation, theoretical foundation and features of self-directed learning and web course, the learning resource module, communication module, electronic learning portfolio module and service support module of thermal physics bilingual curriculum are designed and developed with the technology of ASP.Net 2.0 within Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005, the structure and accomplishment of the former three modules are also expatiated. A self-directed learning web course support system is accomplished, therefore the students can learn by themselves under the guidance of the teachers and the teachers can know the situation of the student's learning easily and manage the system conveniently by using the system.The content of the system is College Thermal Physics, however, it can be any courses as long as the structure of the learning resources is followed and the related forum modules are customized. This thesis makes an attempt on how to effectively develop web-based learning and lays the foundation for further research on it.
