High Level Architecture (HLA) is a new generation of distributed interactive simulation (DIS) architecture. It aims to improve the interoperability of various simulation applications and the reuse of simulation resources. In this thesis, firstly the history of DIS is reviewed and HLA is introduced. Then six types of management services of HLA are discussed. Moreover, the time management (TM) and the data distribution management (DDM) of HLA are particularly studied.TM, which is the key of HLA in integrating different kinds of simulations, directly influences the reliability of simulation results. Based on TM mechanism, three types of time advancing modes of HLA federation member are summarized. Both the existing problem of HLA in real-time simulation application and the improved methods are dissertated. Besides, the problem and an implementation of clock synchronization are given out.DDM, which is the foundation of internal communications in Run-Time Infrastructure, has effects on the running performance of federation. The mechanism of DDM is described, and the matching algorithm is also studied in depth. With analyzing the influence of choosing different regions in order to build large simulation systems, the concept of objects'external advancing model is put forward in order to reduce the amount of communication messages. Formulations are deduced mathematically. The design principles and related implementation methods of objects'external advancing model are explored.HLA applications in DIS systems are stuied, too. The basic procedure of developing a HLA simulation program is summarized. An illustration system of federation design according to practical application is presented. The prototype is tested and test data is analyzed. The results show the technical feasibility and advantage of the method.
