The expeonential growth in communication business operations boosts a rapid development in optical fiber communication technology; especially since the 90s of last century, optical network has enjoyed tremendous progress and been widely applied. The emergence of Multi-service Transport Platform has met the requirement for access and transmission of multi-service and progress of DWDM in transmission distance and wavelength multiplexing relieves the tension situation of bandwidth to a great extent. However, how to solve the problems of quickness, dynamic and SLA classification transmission management on multi-service? In order to solve these problems, a new type of network concept as well as Automatically Switched Optical Network ---- ASON emerges as the times require. Intelligent optical network integrates SONET/SDH's functions and characteristics, high efficiency IP technology, DWDM with large capacity and revolutionary network control software for forming ASON and laying a foundation for the network in next generation and consequently providing an elastic, flexible and expendable optical network for operators in order to reduce the cost of maintenance.The system structure of ASON consists of three independent layers including transmission, control and management, among which, the standard intelligent optical network irrelevant to the bottom layer has turned into ASTN, and OTN at the bottom layer is called ASON.1. Transmission plane function:Cross: intelligent optical network is provided with powerful crossing and transmitting capacity to support the need of network for keeping flexible on dispatch. Multi-network: physical topology of intelligent optical network can be of great variety: cellular, circularity and catenarian as well as their combination. Operator topology: the Operator topology may be included and applied in cellular physical topology. Multi-service: support the need for multi-service access and its transmission based on circuit switching and IP.2. Control plane function:Control plane: in intelligent optical network, an independent control plane has been formed in support of various control operations such as recovery and protection, quick configuration, quick add and net element removal and automatic regulation of optical power.
