Along with the development of the computer, many industries and branches have developed their own software to manage their inner information. The explosion of the Internet in recent years has caused the need of the association between different industries and branches to achieve communication and information sharing. However, various heterogeneities exist between different data sources, especially semantic heterogeneities, because the same data was modeled by different users in different ways. Information integration technology was developed for achieving information exchange and sharing between distributed, anonymous data sources. Information integration can utilize the existing knowledge to the utmost extent, and it can shield the characteristics of data such as semi-structured,heterogeneity and distribute, consequently provides a unified pattern for users to realize information exchanges for heterogeneous data repository and to obtain valuable information from heterogeneous data repository. In information integration, we must construct a universal semantic model to resovle the problem of semantic heterogeneity. This model must be platform-free, and can shield the semantic heterogeneity of different information. Ontology is an explicit specification of a conceptualization; it can availably express the general knowledge in certain fields, and can be universal semantic model of information integration. So, at present, the active research on approaches to information integration is mostly based on ontology.
