With the growing up of IP technology, data traffic has increasingly taken the major possession of information communication, which brought the MAN two big challenges: high bandwidth usage and high reliability. So it came in RPR, a newly developing orientation of MAN, sponged both the economies of Ethernet and the telegraphic protection merits of SONET/SDH. And at once it became a research highlight of academy as well as industry after presented in 2001.Firstly, in this paper it introduced the fundamentals and elementary characteristics of RPR. After that, it's engaged in detailed introduction and further research on the techniques of backbone that bracing RPR functioning. We found that no matter what kind of protection mechanic was adopted, wrapping or steering, a link could no longer carry data traffic when the link at its counter side of the same span was under protection. Therefore, in order to boost up the usage of bandwidth, we brought forward the concept non-reliable traffic to release the locked link. Further more, under the precondition of non-reliable traffic, we renewed the operation of fairness algorithm as well as the maintenance of the ringlet selection's couple core parameters. And we hired topology matrix to solve most of the problems encountered in our research. In the end, we recommended and discussed the hardware implement of RPR and our non-reliable traffic.
