Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a new solution method to metropolitan area network (MAN). IEEE802.17 Working Group is developing the RPR standard as a MAC .layer protocol independent of physical layer. This paper discusses the key technologies of RPR and the criterions of IEEE802.17 drafts, and then analyzes the fairness algorithms (FA) in bandwidth distribution with emphasis. And on the base of the RPR simulation model in OPNET, the oscillation problems of bandwidth distribution are discussed with simulation experiments. In addition, the paper expatiates the reconciliation sublayers between IEEE802.17 MAC layer and physical layers of metropolitan area network, which are important to the comprehension and realization of the RPR protocol.
