Optical fiber grating (OFG) is a new kind of optical communication device, which has find wide applications in recent years. Optical fiber Bragg gratings and other optical communication components based on OFG will play an important role in optical communication systems. Dispersion of pulses transmitting in the fiber is the main block to the development of high speed and long distance fiber communication. Dispersion compensation has become a hot-spot. Chirped fiber gratings offer many advantages , including low insertion loss, compactness, cost effective, high dispersion value, thereby showing the most powerful and a promising way for dispersion compensation.We strictly used couple mode theory that describe the principle of fiber gratings from Maxwell equation, and analysis the properties of chirped fiber grating. The research shows that the delay linearity of fiber grating without apodization is bad and the curve of dispersion is not smooth, so it's difficult for this kind of fiber grating to be used in dispersion compensation system. When we used the fiber grating with some kind of apodizaion we created, its properties, including reflection. delay linearity and dispersion. however. became optimized. As a dispersion compensation device, it's qualified for being used in fiber communication systems.
