Based on the coupled-mode theory, the optical characteristics of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings with four apodized functions constructed by author are calculated numerically using transfer matrix method, and a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating with one perfect apodized function is applied to compensate fiber dispersion. Some valuable conclusions are obtained. The thesis is helpful for the design and facture of a linearly chirped fiber grating as dispersion compensator. In the first chapter, the fundamental conception and analytic method are introduced in brief. At the same time, the optical characteristics of a uniform fiber grating are discussed simply. In the second chapter, the effect of apodized function on the optical characteristics of linearly chirped fiber grating is illuminated, and the optical characteristics of linearly chirped fiber grating with four apodized functions constructed by author are calculated numerically using transfer matrix method. When the optical characteristics of four functions and the best property of a linearly chirped fiber grating with gaussian function are compared and analyzed, parabola squared function is found much better. In the third chapter, the reason of pulse broadened and the importance of dispersion compensation are pointed out, and the dispersion of linearly chirped fiber grating is appraised. After the principle of dispersion compensation is analyzed in detail, linearly chirped fiber gratings with gaussian and parabola squared functions are applied to compensate the dispersion of standard single-mode fiber over 100km under the same parameter respectively. The result shows that the pulse's output shape of the latter is better. In the fourth chapter, the work done by author is summarized during his study for Master degree.
