This thesis summarized my research results in the past two years:Analysis of the optical characteristics of a fiber grating,Design of fiber grating for dispersion compensation and Fabrication of fiber grating. The data rate of the fiber transmission network would be prohibited due to the dispersion within the ISSOnm low loss window. Dispersion compensation can be used to obtain the outstanding improvement of the system performance. The dispersion compensators made by fiber gratings are low loss,compact,polarization insensitive,and relatively simple and feasible to fabricate. In this thesis,the spectral characteristics of a fiber grating are analyzed by using the coupled mode theory. The influences of various structural features such as the length,chirp,coupling coefficient and aperdization to the spectral characteristics were studied numerically with a transfer matrix method. The reflective spectral responses for fiber Bragg gratings with different aperdization are analyzed,and the optimal aperdization is obtained. The phase-shifted fiber grating was analyzed too. Then,numerical analysis on dispersion compensation characteristic of linearly chirper fiber gratings was carried out and the main parameters were optimized. Introduced a new way for dispersion compensation in transmission using uniform fiber Bragg gratings. At the last,the analysis of fiber grating production with a phase mask was carried out. Based on diffraction and interference theories,we access the near-field optical intensity distributions produced by a periodic mask and draw the important conclusion that we must put the mask near the fiber as we can in the experiment.
