There is a direct relation between the microscopic structure of metal material and its composition or performance. By observing and analyzing character, size and distribution of microscopic structure of metal material, its ingredient and performance can be known to us. For a long time, people analyze and appraise metallographic structure using traditional qualitative and half-quatitative methods. Recently, with the development of quantitative metallography and stereology, the regular functional relation between the microscopic structure of metal material and its performance begins to be studied. In order to explore the regulation, some characteristic parameters of metallographic structure need measure. Getting these parameters only on handwork is not practical due to its inaccurate calculating results and heavy work. The technology of image processing with computer that develops rapidly and comprehensively has started to become an effective way for measuring parameters of metallographic structure and quantitative metallographic analysis.In this research, an analyzing and recognizing system of metallographic microscopic structure based on MATLAB was developed with the application of computer image processing technology, which own visualized interface and human-computer interacting function, realize automatic measurement of several kinds of characteristic parameters and such functions as measuring grain size and recognizing equilibrium phase structure of carbon steel and cast iron etc. This article mainly involve such following contents:1. Introduce the current latest advance in metallographic analysis field and clarify some basic conceptions, measuring principles and methods.2. By utilizing digital image processing technology, realize gray level transformation,binarization,image enhancement,noise elimilating,dilation and erosion,boundary detection and thinning etc.3. Realize the measurement of metallographic characteristic parameters by means of digital image processing technology and develop different calculating methods for them according to different shapes and distributions of crystal granule.4. Based on the method of measuring grain size and area percentage ratio, realize the measurement of grain fineness and the recognition of equilibrium phase structure of carbon steel...
