With the wide-spread application of computer and the rapid development of computer image analysis technology, metallographic image analysis system has been rapidly developed and widely used in detection in industrial material. It has become an important detection machine in industry and has brought great profit to the industry.Mias 2000 Metallographic Image Analysis System(MIAS) is developed on the basis of Mias 300. The operation system for Mias 300 is DOS while the operation system for Mias 2000 is WINDOWS 98/2000. With the wider application and higher demand of the customers, more advanced image analysis and treatment technology has been used in Mias 2000, which has incorporated many metallographic analysis and detection functions.The first two chapters in this thesis introduce the computer image analysis technology and the developmental process and research advances in MIAS. Chapter 3 introduces the MIAS product R&D process and the components of the system, its hardware and software environment and the designing method of this system. Chapter 4 is the most important part of this thesis, which emphatically discusses the principle and algorithm of the key technology. In Chapter 4, Part 1 introduces the auto-loading technology and gives out the algorithm for auto-focusing; Part 2 and Part 3 introduces the auto-slicing and auto-merging technique for metallographic image, which is the most advanced technique at home; Part 4 discusses how to conduct precise and appropriate cutting on the metal image, and gives out some new algorithm and realization method; Part 5 introduces the design and improvement on the report formof the metallographic image detection; Part 6 discusses the principle of the metallographic image printing with fixed sizes.The author has participated in the research and development of the Mias 2000 since 1997 and then conducted marketing of this product. In the developmental process, some advanced image analysis and treatment technology was used, which has greatly improved the metallographic image analysis capacity of this system and solved some persisting problems in metal detection. After several years development and improvement, Mias 2000 has become one of the most widely used and most influential metal image analysis system in China.
