The emergence of grid implements the connection of all sorts of resource on the Internet, including computing, storage, communication and information resource. In addition, grid has a great foreground of application both technically and commercially. Grid monitoring collects the feature information and running status information of grid resources. Grid monitoring system, through which grid administrators and users get to know about the grid, is an important infrastructure and component of grid computing environment. Directory service system is responsible for organizing and managing static data and real-time and dynamic information brought about during the process of monitoring. In addition, grid monitoring system provides a unified and consistent projection of static and dynamic information of grid resources for grid users.This paper discusses the design and implementation of a distributed directory service in grid monitoring system. We first compare and analyze several directory service systems in grid environment, such as Grid Monitoring Architecture, Relational Grid Monitoring Architecture, Metacomputing Directory Service and Monitoring and Discovery Service, as well as popular directory service protocols, such as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. From those systems and protocols, design demands and functions can be achieved. We present a design of global and local architecture of distributed directory service, including functions of all modules. After that, implementation details of the system have been discussed specifically. Those details should cover: data model, data structure, query process, information storage format and data transmission format and protocols in local directory service, as well as data transmission format and protocols among local directory service components.
