Image compression has been a very crucial role in the multimedia information technique, the wavelet transform has proven to be a valuable tool in image compression application during the last decade. More and more researchers have been attracted to study the new theory related to wavelet and its application in image compression.Optical wavelet transform performs wavelet transform in optical way through spatial filter in frequency domain or projection in spatial domain. It features characteristics of parallelism and real-time. Applying optical wavelet transform into image compression field will improve the speed of compressing image data, which is vital in some application fields that need transmit abundant image data.In this paper, the fundamental theory and trend of the development of optical information processing and wavelet transform are introduced. The advantages of optical information processing are analyzed. The valid range and frequency plane of our optical 4f system has been deduced and it is regarded as the size of our film of wavelete filters. The requirement of the wavelet was studied when wavelet transform is implemented in optical way, including the basic need of image data compression and the special need of optical element. Then the accuracy needed by optical wavelet filter in image compression system is introduced, which provides the theory basis and measure of the system.At last, the expectation of our task and next work was provided.
