Because of the various advantages of the wavelet transform, it has been applied to many fields, of which the image data compression is one application. JPEG2000 Standard uses multi-resolution encoding method, it has the advantage of high compression ratio, gradual transmission support and the"interest field"processing, but due to its high computation amount, it has been mainly used in static image and the real time processing of dynamic image is still poorly understood.Optical information processing is to realize transforms or processing of input signals by optic methods, this process has parallel and real time properties and the optical realization of image compression based on wavelet transform will prominently decrease the time for data compression.In this text, we introduced the basic theory of the optical information processing, used experiments to validate optical frequency filtering, summarized the kinds of the optical correlators, and contrive a scheme for optical wavelet transform according to system required.The sixty-four-dollar question of the application of the optical wavelet transform to image compression is the processing precision of the information processing system. In the last part, we analyzed the factors that lead to the fall of the processing precision, put forward resolution improving methods and demonstrated it by some experiments. At last, the expectation of our task and next work were given.
