As the application of wavelet transform in image/video processing becomes popular and popular (wavelet transform has been used in some newer international standards such as MPEG-4, JPEG2000) and low bite rate application (such as video meeting, mobile communication) appears widely, it is necessary to develop the so-called second generation compression standard ground on VQ, sub-band encoding, wavelet transform etc to replace the older video compression standard based on DCT. Among the newer compression technique, wavelet transform has more developing foreground. However, wavelet transform is based on deep math knowledge, which make it not easy to study and use. But from the point of engineering and combining the wavelet transform with multi-resolution analyzing, it will be understood easier and become clear. So, this thesis expatiate the theory of wavelet transform and its application in image/video encoding based on multi-scale analyzing for the purpose of engineering application.Directed by the theory of wavelet transform, the author made a video compression circuit board and programmed related software for it. As the core, this board used AD company's wavelet transform chip-ADV601, together with other chips such as TI company's DSP-TMS320VC5410, ALTERA company's CPLD-EPM7128 and so on. Through debugging and testing, video encoding and decoding using wavelet transform had realized on this board and had good performance.
