Video communication technology via Internet has been becoming a very hot topic in recent years. With the development of VLSI and embedded technologies, embedded video communication terminals are becoming more and more attractive. The network interface and real time video transmission are the comparatively important modules. The thesis developed an Ethernet network interface based on TI's digital media DSP DM642. RTP/RTCP were employed to transfer the video streams for remote video monitoring in real-time.The on chip circuits were matched with the Intel LXT971 PHY , an Ethernet physical layer faster adapter and other components to form the hardware interface. Intel LXT971 can be combined seamlessly with the DSP Ethernet modules EMAC/MDIO. Based on DSP/BIOS, the TI Network developing kit (NDK) was employed to support the TCP/IP protocol stack and the network driver was finished with suitable interface configuration. The application software on DM642 employed H.263 video codec standard which was optimized for efficiency and robustness based on the hardware platform. To overcome the issues related to video transmission based on UDP, RTP/RTCP were combined to deliver video data to improve the rapidity and Qos. In addition, The H.263 decoder running on the PC was implemented supporting RTP/RTCP data communication and mainly included two modules of RTP video data receiving and decoding.DSP code test tools were utilized to test the codes running on DSP. The experimental results of real time video communication were illustrated.
