With the development of IT, more and more enterprises deal with their business with MIS. First, MRP was appeared, then was MRP Ⅱ, and now is ERP. Behind these systems, the contents of enterprise MIS have been enlarged and enriched. ERP mainly focuses on enterprise planning and cannot wholly control the workshop. At the same time, there is an information gap between production management and production control. So enterprises need MIS for workshop that can real-timely supervise the workshop and integrate enterprise information. MES is a MIS for workshop, which is standing between the high level of planning management system and the low industry control level. It can precisely schedule, dispatch, trace, supervise the workshop production information.The application of MES should be based on the production type of the enterprise. Different production type has different demands to the functions of MES. ETO is the most complicated production type of all production types, and it deals with designing, production and marketing. So the application of MES is very difficult. But Because of the complication of ETO production type, the value of researching MES with ETO production type is high.The thesis combined the actual conditions of Shenyang Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd, researched MES in ETO mechanical manufacturing enterprises, and developed a model system with Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Firstly, the importance of informatization of mechanical enterprises and production types were summarized. Secondly, MES was lucubrated. The contents included vertical enterprise information integration based on MES, workflow technology and MES, the function and process modeling of MES, MES and the logistics management of ETO enterprises, reconfigurable MES. Then the designing of the model system was indicated in detail. The main contents of this part included deciding the functions of the system and building a database for the system with Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
