H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of the ITU-T Video CodingExperts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).The main goals of the H.264/AVC standardization effort have been enhancedcompression performance and provision of a "network-friendly" video representationaddressing "conversational" (video telephony) and "non-conversational" (storage, broadcast, or streaming) applications. H.264/AVC has achieved a significantimprovement in rate-distortion efficiency relative to existing standards. The main task of this thesis is to port and optimize H.264 "baseline" CODECsoftware on the Texas Instruments' TMS320DM642 Digital Media Processor. Theperformance improvement introduces significant complexity to H.264 CODEC. It is achallenge to implement the coding algorithm under the limited resource. I am incharge of ompitmizing the P picture.II finished porting H.264 algorithm to the embedded hardware platform of DM642DSPs processor. Separated the decode functions into sub-functions according todifferent image types. The modules responsible for optimization are: rewrite the 1/4pixel interpolation module in assembly language, optimize the motion compensationmodule, process of optimizing the samples outside the image edge, and the imageoutput module. Finally, integrate the decoder program with the system program. It had been realized that the decode ability can get QCIF format picture of100~120fps on DM642 and CIF format picture of 20~30fps;endode ability about15~25 fps QCIF.
