Micro-hollow cathode discharge (MHCD) is a newly advanced micro-discharge technique based on ordinary cathode discharge in a sub-millimeter level micro-hollow under high pressure. MHCD can be used as plasma cathodes for the large-volume high-pressure glow discharge to solve the instability of glow discharge. At first, an overview of the research progress on the fundamental theory of the MHCD is presented. The micro-hollow cathode sustained glow-discharge (MCSD) is discussed in particular, and then the discharge plasma source is introduced. The influence of operation mode and the discharge parameters of the MCSD on the large-volume high-pressure glow discharge plasma sources are analyzed. Finally, the structural design of MCSD is discussed in detail and the discharge characteristics of MCSD are discussed experimentally. On the basis of the MCSD experiments, the switching power supply which can control the gas discharge mode of MCSD (cw /pulse) and adjusts the output is designed. In this paper, the design of the main circuit, the drive circuit and the control circuit of the switching power supply are discussed in detail. This switching power supply can be connecting to outer control equipments, for example the micro-controller, the computer and so on. In the design of the power supply, the main circuit topology frame uses full-bridge series resonant switching and parallel load connection, in which, four MOSFETs are adopted as the power switches, and features high operation frequency and fast response. In addition, the MOSFET in the switching power supply has no hard turn-on or turn-off situation in transition, thus the disturbance to the power system is avoided. Especially, the switching power system can provide the steady discharge current without any amperite.
