With the development of modern industry and agriculture, pumping stations are greatly increased, especially in large scale water distribution engineering. In the past, when pumping station planned, the demand for the production of industry and agriculture and engineering investment are taken too much into account, while the consumption of energy and operational cost are usually ignored. Thus, many pumping station are on operation at low efficiency, which leads to great energy waste and transfers the saved investment into the operation cost. So it is of great importance to study optimal pump operation to reduce the energy consumption and make it more economic in pump operation. Firstly, the paper introduces the important parameter and performance curve of pump and the composition of pumping station. After analyzing energy transfer in pumping station, the paper draws an conclusion that core energy of pumping station cost lies in the main part which in composed of pumps and electromotor. Subsequently, the paper explains the methodology of mathematical programming and the theory of decomposition and harmony as the mathematical background of pump operational model, then probes into optimal pump operational models. Few rev-adjustable pumps are used in pump stations and even pumps with different adjustable feature exist in the same pumping station in China. Correspondingly, two different models are established, one for pumping stations with the same adjustable feature and the other for pumping station with different adjustable feature pumps in this paper. At the same time the method of dynamic programming and decomposition and harmony are used to get the solution of the models. The paper also analyzes the theory of the reduction of energy consumption after rev-adjustable pumps are used in stations ,brings forth the calculation method to choose the best number of rev-adjustable pumps and establishes the nonlinear programming model of pumping station composed of rev-firm pumps and adjustable-rev pumps. Moreover, taking variable electrovalence into account, the paper brings forward the model of daily optimal pump operation. At the end of this paper, the paper bring forth a total structure of an integrated pumping station automation system .To realize the safe and economical operation, the optimal model is embed in the pump figuration software.
