Now, as the key technology of laser display, high-power all-solid-state tricolor laser is a hot field in current laser research international. For tricolor, green laser is relative mature, therefore the attention turns to red and blue laser. Moreover, the power of red laser needed in display is the highest, so the red laser research is more important. Further, red laser is of great interest in the field of medical application and also used as a pumping source for Cr3+ lasers. So it is very significant to study high-power red laser. In this paper, the theory and experiment of red laser are studied. At first, diode-pumped all-solid-state laser's advantages, the present development, as well as red laser's applications, obtained methods and the progress are introduced. In the second chapter, the work principle of all-solid-state lasers is analyzed in theory. Aiming at four-level system, the characters, such as threshold power, output power and slope efficiency of solid-state lasers are deduced based on rate equation. We also analyzed the double-frequency technique, and optical resonator theory which could be helpful to design resonator. In the third and fourth chapters, some kinds of laser crystals apllied to DPL and double-frequency crystals used to produce red laser are summarized. Their optical parameters are presented and compared. Here, we emphasize the Nd:YAG and KTP crystals, which are chosen in our experiment. In addition to their optical specialities, heat effect in Nd:YAG and the doule-frequency feature of KTP at 1319nm are discussed. In the fifth chapter, we set up a plat-concave cavity for LD side-pumped Nd:YAG/KTP introcavity frequency-doubling red laser experiment according to the above theories as well as analysis and comparison of necessary apparatus. In the experiment, when the pumped current is 22A, we obtain 3.8W 660nm red laser, and the result is analyzed. The last chapter is the summarization and prospect of the paper.
