In recent years, mobile communication develops very fast. As a kind of communication device, mobile handset has become an important part of people's lives. Because of the furious market competition and the customers' request for good appearance and performance of mobile handsets,the mobile handset will develop to smaller, lower weight and multifunctional. So, the design for antenna has moved to an important position of the mobile handset's design from a subordinate position.The FDTD method and the principle of microstrip antenna are introduced. Some methods to reduce the dimension and improve the bandwidth are provided.Because of the attractive features of low profile, light weight, easy fabrication, and conformability to mounting hosts, this paper chooses it to design the antenna for mobile handsets. Based on microstrip antennas, the antenna is modeled and simulated by the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain). According to the design of literature, in this design, a shorting pin has been adopted to reduce the antenna's size, also an air gap and a capacitive patch have been used for improve the bandwidth. Using the FDTD to analyze and optimize the antenna, and the bandwidth are 33MHz and 240MHz, respectively. This result shows that in the low frequency, this antenna has good agreement with the result from the literature, and in the high frequency, the bandwidth is apparently wider than the result from the literature. This antenna has simple structure, compact size, wide bandwidth, and it is suitable for tri-band GSM900 (Global System For Mobile), DCS-1800 (Digital Communication System) and PCS-1900 (Personal Communication Services).
