In recent years, the development of digital revolution and Internet result in the globality of economy, trade and information transmission. In that case, there are huge amounts of dada distributed over different storage resources, so it is very difficult for users to access them. Therefore it is the hot research issue in the domain of computer science to discuss how to manage the different dataset in the wide area. The concept Data Grid appears after that. Management of dataset is the core of it. The key task of Data Grid aims at the management of a variety of data resources distributed across the wide-area based environment, which compose a uniform and virtual computing platform of shared resources.This paper mainly studies the directory service, which is one of the important parts in Data Grid. It introduces the theoretics and research actuality of Data Grid, especially in directory service. We analysis many project and technology about Data Grid. On the base of it, we design and develop our own Data Grid about management of people data in our country. This model can provide uniform access interface and management of the large scale distributed dataset. The model use Metadata Catalog to organize the resource information and provide the directory service. The directory service has the functions such as logistic view of resources, management of resource information, query and orientation of resources, user management, security management, and etc.Currently most research are concentrated on sharing of file-based information resources, while rarely involving database systems. However, a large number of Grid applications are in great need of database support. This paper outline an evolutionary path to integrate database to widely fulfill the data management requirements from applications. In this project, a Metadata Catalog management system is constructed. This system is different from the common way to manage the Metadata Catalog and based on JNDI and LDAP. It is very convenient for users to operate.
