Research And Implementation Of Topology Discovery And Display In Web-based Network Management

The technology of Web-Based Network Management (WBNM) is widely used now, because its flexibility, convenience. Topology discovery provides clear view of the state of a whole network. So, topology discovery is very important in WBNM. At the same time, better solutions to display an interactive network topology in web browser are needed.After researching on topology discovery technologies of WBNM, a topology discovery solution and a topology display method were proposed.The poposed topology discovery solution focuses on ICMP and SNMP protocols. ICMP is used to search exist network devices and SNMP is used to discovery links between network nodes.The poposed topology display method combines SVG with XML-RPC is proposed to implement web-based network topology display. This solution uses SVG to describe the topology of networks, and XML-RPC to realize the intercommunication between client and server. Using this solution, a management system can express a network topology in rich ways, such as zoom without distortion, colors, and dynamic shapes. This solution can also provide interactive topology graph operations, such as edit and save up.The proposed network topology discovery and display solutions are implemented, demonstrating a successful application to web-based network management.
