Rational Unified Process is a software engineering process which is use case driven, architecture-centric and using iterative and incremental developing method. It assimilates the excellence research fruits of the Object Orient software engineering filed, applies Unified Modeling Language as the visual modeling tool, and supplies the methodological instruction for developing Object Orient software system.RUP is a general framework of software process. It fits for most software projects, developing information system, also need a development process to advance the quality, efficiency and reusability. The purpose of this thesis is research and application of RUP, the Two-dimensional developing model of RUP and its application features are researched in the thesis, the comparison with RUP and the structure developing process which is using waterfall model is also included, RUP has some advantage than the waterfall model. But full RUP is too complex for the information system which is not large scale, may lead to lower efficiency, so the thesis focuses on the problem "Can RUP be agile?", combining with the principle and method of process tailoring, RUP is tailored and improved in the thesis. The improved process reserves the soul of RUP-use case, layered architecture and iteration, possesses less iteration workflow, and mainly use requirements, analysis & design and implement core process workflows in each iteration, analyze the detailed application step of requirement, analysis & design, implement workflow , build use case model, design model and implement model, avoids the excessive emphasis documents disadvantage of RUP.At last, an example of information system developing- modern exam & general question bank system is used in this thesis to prove the theory. The improved RUP is applied in developing question bank management subsystem, adapting the iteration method , the requirements change or expansion can be dealt agility, the requirement model, design model and implement model is built by use-case driven, the layered system architecture is also established. It is indicated by the practice that applying RUPproperly in developing information system can make the effect of advancing adapting the requirement change developing efficiency, and reducing risk.
