Withtherapiddevelopmentintheareaofcommunicationtechnologyandcomputertechnology, digital video plays a more and more important role in information society. Image/Videotransmission and processing have become hot focusof studyin the field of industryand academe.ISO and ITU-T have put forward some advanced standards. Common people enjoy theconvenience made by the popularization of these standards, while the development of Very LargeScale Integrate circuit (VLSI) and Programmable Logic Device (such as FPGA etc.) makesreal-time video compression and transportation possible. H.264, the newly international norm onvideo coding, stands for the highest achievement in the image compression field, and providesmoreeffective compression. But themethod H.264 adopted is based on block partition and it willbringabout block artifacts in reconstructed picturewhen applied in low bit rate environment. Theartifacts may lead to the decline of image quality and influence the acceptance of eyes normally, whichrestrictsitsapplicationextensively.First of all, the history and actuality of image compression technology and its application areintroduced in this paper. Some popular video coding standards including H.261, H.263, MPEG-1,MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and H.264 are discussed briefly. Then some key techniques in H.264recommendations are studied in detail. Moreover, according to the process of video compressionutilized in H.264, analyses the technology related to appearance and elimination of block artifactin detail. At last, we study the loop-filter in H.264. The hardware implementation of in-loopdeblockingfilterbasedonFPGAisproposed.Someincentiveexperimentsdemonstratethesystemwithstableandgoodperformances.
