Recently, with the rapid development of embedded system, the application domain of it is more and more broad. As the functions of embedded system become much stronger and more complicated than before, using a kind of Operation System becomes a necessary choice. Because of its free of charge, high reliability, with the whole source code attached and strong network functions etc, Embedded Linux Operation System gradually becomes the focus of every person, which has been used in various embedded products. With the quick development of internet and communication technology, applications concerning video have flourished such as video conference, video telephone and Digital Television etc. H.264 is a new generation video compression standard. Using the mature technique, it has much higher compression efficient and more concise expression forms than other standards, meanwhile provides very good video quality, which make it as the most efficient video compression method. Compared with the other video coding method, H.264 has much more broad prospect. We can expect that it will be broadly used in all fields of video industry, especially in video conference, video telephone and Digital Television etc. This thesis makes analysis and research addressing to the above mentioned focus among computer academia and industry. The contents of this thesis include: the definition and the organization structure of embedded system, the advantages of using Embedded Linux Operation system as the OS of the embedded system, the GUI of the Embedded Linux OS---the features and technologies of MiniGUI, introduction of H.264 compression algorithm and some optimizing method for H.264 decoder based on JM9.4, a realizing project for the H.264 decoder in Embedded system.
