Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most advanced radio navigation system which was developed by the U.S Department of Defence. The system can be used under any weather conditions, all day long and anywhere on the earth. It can provide land, marine and airborne user with continuous, highly accurate three-dimension position, velocity, time data etc. It has various advantages that are unexampled other kind of navigation equipment. Now GPS receivers, as a type of advanced equipment on navigation and positioning, have been widely used in both military and civil field. Firstly,this thesis introduces the system of navigation, its condition, and also the feature, concept, consists of GPS system and the makeup and the operating principle of the GPS receiver. The thesis explains the signal -captured method of GPS and analyzes the performance of signal-capture. Details error-tracking in the design of tracking and demodulation loop and gives some methods how to improve tacking precision. Then discusses the design and research of a special GPS receiver based on GARMIN-GPS25LVS-OEM board. And a method of reading positioning-data from GPS-OEM board is presented. The thesis introduces makeup and characteristics of the OEM board and its typical application system. Specially, the data format of NMEA-0183 and the interface between MCS-51 and GPS-OEM via serial communication port are described in detail. At the same time, it is equipped with necessary peripheral circuit and LCD, which can be used to display both characters and graphs. The design project of the GPS receiver and the design method of hardware and software are presented in detail in the thesis. At last, the paper explains the problem of route management in the GPS navigation. The route management is a part of shipping-track in the shipping navigation system. It includes set-up, finding and adjustment of shipping-track. Visual C++ is used as a tool of editor in this system, it provides a brief and practical development environment, and it makes development of applied program very productive. Use of MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class Library) can decrease lots of workload and increase the reliability of system debugging .Using Visual C++ as development platform ,with man-machine interface and parameter computation, we developed a set of practical software for shipping-track management.
