As an emerging technology field of information technology, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is becoming more and more popular. Specifically, the passive RFID systems which work in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) have been diffusely concerned in recent years, due to their potential and extensive use in the area of logistics and supply chain management. Currently there are various brands and types of UHF RFID passive tags in the market. A methodology which evaluates and optimizes the tag's application performances is urgently required, including the design optimization of tag antenna and the systematic testing of the tag's performance.In this paper, incisive analysis and research on factors is presented which impacts the performance of RFID tags, e.g. label design, manufacturing and testing. We propose a methodology to guide tag application performance evaluation and optimization. Firstly, the methodology selects application environment, defines the requirements of tags and determines tag evaluation indicators. Secondly, tag option module will recommend users some tag antenna styles and design pyramid testing framework to get performance evaluation. Thirdly, simulation analyzes application performance parameters which fit best of the tag antenna, optimizes tag antenna parameters by antenna optimization technology, using pyramid testing framework test tags and compare the application performance of new tag with precedents. If the new tags do not meet the requirement, do all procedures again until the samples meet the requirement. Lastly, input the new tag style into the tag option module. On designing optimization technology of tag antenna, we research the impaction of performance which is brought by every parameter changing in bending optimization technology (including the bending frequency, bending height, bending width and distance of bending feed point). Three components of the pyramid testing framework is proposed-high precision benchmark testing system, UHF base tag and general testing system. We also design and combine different testing system to simulate application environment and complete testing performance evaluation for tag application. This methodology is developed to guide tobacco ant counterfeiting-oriented tag performance evaluating and designing. Correcting assessment of tag application performance and fully verified by the high performance new tag according to this methodology is very important for tag application performance evaluation.This paper summarizes RFID tag antenna techniques, tags'performance evaluation and testing research. It analyzes the hot study area of the tag antennas and the present status of the tag evaluation test as well. The needs and challenges are also mentioned. On this foundation, we propose an evaluation and optimization methodology for tags'application performances, which guides the technical routes of the tags'performance evaluation and optimization in the specific industry. Then we describe the optimization technique of the dipole antenna and the role of pyramid test framework in the evaluation test. At last, in the guidance of this methodology we propose the tags'performance evaluation optimization in tobacco security, and give improvements of tag style selecting system.
