With the development of network communications and multimedia technologies, demand of the multimedia-teaching content which includes video/audio information increases quickly. Distance learning which based on the streaming media technology is a new approach to education. The development and application based on the streaming technology is becoming one hotspot of research. The traditional streaming systems mostly adopt the structure of C/S (Client/Server). However, it blocks the improvement of QoS on streaming because of the limited bandwidth resource and restricted performance of server. In peer-to-peer (P2P) network, each client receives data and forwards it to others at the same time. Large numbers of clients resource ignored before can be effectively used. The burden on the server will be relieved and the server can provide better quality of service for a great deal of users at the same time. P2P is included in the streaming service so as to directly decrease the load of servers and support more extensive publication of streaming media. At the same time, its application is promising largely. This thesis elaborates on the definition of streaming media technology, the operational principle of stream transmission, the characteristics and advantages of streaming media. And then the status of the P2P technology including its development and applications, and the key technologies of P2P streaming is introduced. On the basis of the analysis to related education theory and the needs of practical teaching, a network teaching system based on P2P and streaming media technology is designed and realized. And a penetrating analysis is made on the important algorithms and methods involved in the design. For combing the technical advantages of P2P technology and C/S, this system is easy to manage and control, and has a good scalability. The thesis is a good reference literature for the application of P2P streaming media in other fields.
