Switch is an important component of pulsed power supply system, its electrical parameters and characteristics have a direct impact on characteristics of power output waveform, such as rise time, amplitude, etc. Compact pulsed power supply requires switches can withstand high voltage and current, and also can withstand high voltage rising rate du/dt and current rising rate di/dt. At the same time, it requires switches have some advantages of small delay time and jitter, long-life, smaller size and so on. Compare to other types of switches, thyristor has a good control characteristics, long service life, small dimensions and noise, so it is one of the major research directions. In this paper, feasibility and the characteristics of SCR in the application of pulsed power supply system are mainly studied.In the application of pulsed power supply, high-power thyristor technical issues that need to be addressed include that good surge current capacity, high current rising rate di/dt, a design of balancing resistors and RC-snubber circuit that valves in series, trigger consistency and isolation, miniaturization, etc.In the paper, through theoretic analysis, simulation and experimental research, the parameters of balancing resistors and RC-snubber circuit are designed. According to miniaturization requirement, an optical trigger circuit which use energy from the capacitance is designed and manufactured, which actualizes optical control signal isolation, consistency and miniaturization. Then, by using protected-circuit and trigger-circuit, the high-power thyristor experimental researches are carried out with its peak current up to 65.4kA and di/dt up to 409A/μs, the results shown that the high-power thyristor conducting over-voltage and recovery-voltage are effective suppressed and trigger-circuit is operated safely and reliably. At the same time, SCR life-testing is carried out and the thyristor temperature is examined, the results provided sufficient evidence to prove that the thyristor as the main power switch can be used in pulsed power supply technology.
