Effects Of Icon Design Factors On User Recognition In Graphical User Interface

Icon is one of the most important components of graphical user interface. It also plays significant role in the interaction between users and machines including computers. In graphical user interface, icon design and recognition are mutually reverse processes. Designers use icons, which are always made of some visual and acoustic symbols or the combination of the two to show interactive functions. On the other hand, users try to understand the functions so as to fulfill the interaction tasks by icon recognition. So that the quality of icon design is related to user recognition and further influence the implement of interactive features.Some basic problems in this field, such are how users cognize icons, how is the interactive process, and which design factors may affect user recognition, would be understood with studies on the relationship between icon design factors and user recognition. The quality of icon would also be improved through this kind of research, which may have good impact on the usability of both icons and user interface.This thesis focuses on the study of icon design and user recognition. Main research and analysis cover process of user recognition, icon design factors, principles of the relationship between the two and future design suggestion.
