Hydrology is the basic work of water conservancy, and hydrological monitoring is the basis of hydrological work. Hydrological monitoring is extremely important to avoid flood and ensure water safety and economic development. Xinjiang regional factors determine that the seasonal distribution of water is very uneven. Additionally with the unusual climate change in recent years, many parts of Xinjiang have occurred flood disasters frequently, which made serious harm to people's lives and property. However, there are still outstanding problems in the hydrological development in Xinjiang, such as slow infrastructure, unstrung hydrological monitoring capacity, and low level of modernization of information. Thereby it's especially important to improve the monitoring level.Wireless sensor network technology provides a new way for monitoring hydrological information. Wireless sensor network consists of a large number of tiny nodes with sensor, microprocessor and communication modules which are emplaced unattended monitoring area. They compose the wireless local area network, and send messages wirelessly through multi-hop manner to the monitoring center.This article researches on Wireless Sensor Networks based on ZigBee protocol for the Wulabo Reservoir water level monitoring system in Urumqi River. Firstly, Wireless Sensor Networks and ZigBee protocol theory and structure is researched; the advantages of Wireless Sensor Network based on ZigBee protocol used in hydrological monitoring system is analyzed; then, the network equipment terminals, routers and coordinator are constructed with CC2430 as the core; the mesh topology of WSN is formatted based on the Z-Stack protocol to collect the information of water level and wireless transmit; the monitoring center analyzes and processes the data by LabVIEW software. Finally, carries out the test proving capabilities of the system real-time monitoring.
