It's significant to detect cows oestrus in dairy cow breeding, and the timely detecting cows oestrus will improve the reproduction rate and milk production, and improve economic benefits. Therefore, timely and accurate identification of oestrus becomes very important, and the traditional method of manual observing cow's oestrus no longer meet the requirements of the development of modern dairy cow breeding.ZigBee is a new wireless sensor network technology with short range, low complexity, low power, low data rate and low cost. It is based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard and achieves communication between thousands of tiny sensors to complete data collecting, processing, integrating and transferring. It is particularly suited to environmental monitoring and control system which has small data throughput, inconvenient long-distance field wiring, large area network coverage, the inconvenience of frequent battery replacement or recharge.The wireless sensor network technology and computer technology are applied to dairy cow breeding in this paper. For the special dairy farm environment and the requirements of timely distinguishing cows oestrus, the cow activity monitoring system is designed based on ZigBee technology. System is designed according on the principle of low cost, low power consumption, high reliability and long distance. The radio frequency chip CC2430 is used as the core, and the ZigBee wireless sensor network technology is adopted to set up a wireless network in the dairy farms, and then through the wireless network the data about the activity quantity of cow is acquired, analyzed to determine whether a cow is in heat.The hierarchical structure of ZigBee protocol is analyzed and the functions of each hierarchy are studied in this paper. Based on the study of ZigBee protocol, the overall design scheme is proposed and the system framework of hardware and software is described for the system design requirements and functional requirements. Then the design of the system hardware and software is completed, and the monitoring software is programmed using LabVIEW on PC. Besides, the networking testing is done and the result is analyzed finally. At the end of this paper, the summary is made and the research direction in the future is also brought forward.
