Library is essentially an information communication organization in the sense of communication science. For reading guidance, its processes and elements have much in common with the communication models. As a result, communication methodology can be used to interpret network reading guidance and its conception in library science. The thesis was dedicated to this job and tried to introduce the communication methodology to the research on network reading guidance in order to build a theoretical system as well as develop more practical approaches. The thesis consists of five chapters as below. In the first chapter, the thesis first introduced the background knowledge, the aim and the method of this research. In advance, the thesis explained the significance and necessity of network reading guidance for the academic libraries in the current environment. By literature review and analysis, the thesis issued the viewpoint that at present the research of network reading guidance is narrowly focused on the meaning, principles, format or approaches and not as profound and systematic. In the second chapter, the thesis first introduced the meaning and the principle of reading guidance and made clear the main job of network reading guidance. Then the thesis tried to use the communication method to analyze network reading guidance. The whole process of network reading guidance was seen as a communication case by using the 5W model. The thesis respectively analyzed the five basic elements of communication-the information source, the content of information, the communication medium, the information sink and the feedback of the audience and their counterparts in network reading guidance. Additionally, the thesis introduced some other communication theories, including the gatekeeper theory, the Spiral of Silence Theory, the Uses and Gratifications theory, the agenda setting theory and the opinion leader theory and their using in the research of network reading guidance. The thesis also researched on the new changes of the 5W model in the environment of Web 2.0 architecture. In the third chapter, the thesis first gave several indicators for the assessment of the work of network reading guidance. These indicators include all sides of network reading guidance--the information releasing function in the homepage of the library website, the introduction of the new coming books, the recommendation from the professors and librarians, the disciplinary navigation of recourse, the tutorial for digitalized recourse exploit, the construction of free network recourse system, RSS service and the channels of interaction for readers. The thesis investigated several university libraries and made a crosswise comparison of network reading guidance through these academic libraries. Then, the thesis expatiated on the most important two indicators--the disciplinary navigation and the web 2.0 applications and used these two indicators to evaluate the libraries again. Then the thesis chose Nanjing University library as the research specimen and made a statistics of the collection which is of the most borrowing, hot favorites and best comments. By analyzing the statistical data, the thesis obtained demand model of the readers. In addition, the thesis conducted some research on the famous book website book.douban.com, analyze its reading guidance approaches and conclude its successful experiences in order to contribute a good reference for the academic libraries. In the fourth chapter, based on the case studies, the thesis promoted a construction model for network reading guidance service of the academic libraries and elaborated on the methods, principles, policies and developing orientations. In the final chapter, the thesis summarized and made a conclusion about the research results. The thesis also indicated the shortage of this research and put forward suggestions on the future research.
