With the increasing growth of bandwidth-hungry services such as Voice,data and Video,user's requirements for the bandwidth of future network is growing rapidly. Optical network, with the advantages of service transparent, long survival time, large loading capacity, as well as satisfying the increasing need for bandwidth and new services, is an inevitable trend of access network. EPON, an emerging technology for access networks, precisely fits the implementation of optical fiber access network. In this work, the current situation of Dongguan Telecom access network is investigated based on the operating principle of EPON and a new reformative scheme is proposed and implemented subsequently. The main content of this thesis is demonstrated as follows:(1)Investigate the basic concepts,patterns,structures and applications of several state-of-art access network. Introduce the main characteristics,standards,technological requirements and operationg principles of EPON.(2)Analyse the practical applications of EPON and the current situation and problems of Dongguan Telecom access network, as well as the requirement information of Dongguan users for network service.(3)Based on the current situation of Dongguan Telecom network, combined with the work that has done in EPON network construction project of Dongguan Telecom, a optimization scheme is proposed.Summarizing the research results mentioned above, it is naturally concluded that comparing with APON, BPON, GPON and EPON, characterized by cost-effective and high-performance, is the best solution for the optimization of the current access network.
