Visibility is one of the most important complications affecting the traffic safety in China. Many highways occurred lots of malignant traffic accidents because of low visibility. And huge economic losses were caused. The traditional visibility measuring instrument is more complex and expensive. And it has certain limitations. Therefore, it is significant to improve visibility measurement techniques.Considering the highway characteristics and combined with transmission type visibility survey theory, a new kind of visibility monitoring system was proposed, which was based on wireless network technology. The system consisted of visibility measurement nodes and tuner node. For the visibility measurement nodes, the laser was used as light source. According to the photoelectric detection principle, the intensity attenuated by atmospheric gas was measured by remote photoelectric sensor. The communication between optical emitter and optical receiver was realized by wireless network technology. For the tuner node, the measured data was transmitted to the PC. The data was processed, displayed and stored by PC software.Firstly this paper introduced the realistic meaning of the visibility detection for highway and analyzed the existing inspection methods. Secondly according to the analysis and transmission type measuring principle, the thesis designed a visibility measurement system on wireless sensor network. And then, this paper introduced the hardware design. The system function realization involved signal detection and communication between nodes. Correspondingly, on the basis of the hardware design, the software design was given specifically. On the basis of hardware circuit design, the design of software system parts is completed. The whole system software design part includes network node software design and PC software design. The modularized design of software programming methods, according to the system's function, will the software has been split into several function relatively independent modules. Design module includes wireless communication module, data transceiver module, the data acquisition module, LCD display module and PC display module, etc. The whole system software had very good portability, readability and stability.Finally, using the experimental condition and existing laboratory equipment, the experiment of the designed system was carried out. For the error which appeared in the experiment, the appropriate error solutions were given. The test results had showed that the proposed transmission type visibility detection system based on WSN had been feasible, low power consumption and low cost.
