IMT-Advanced, whose full name is International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced, is the overall framework of 4G mobile communication proposed by International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Some new communication technologies used in IMT-Advanced system, like MIMO, OFDM, high order modulation and adaptive coding, are much difficult to implement in a real hardware system. On one hand, high performance processors are needed to accomplish the signal processing. On the other hand, a data transmission network is needed to facilitate the data exchanging between different algorithms modules. Therefore, a high performance and high throughput hardware platform is needed to implement these signal processing technologies. Besides, the involving of wireless base station puts more requirements on the hardware platform of signal processing. It is supposed to be a modular, extendable, scalable, software-defined and generalized platform so as to guarantee the flexibility of IMT-Advanced mobile communication system.Based on the National Science and Technology Major Project—the Research on IMT-Advanced TDD Specific Technologies, this paper completes the research on the hardware platform for IMT-Advanced communication systems and designs of the demo system according to the research results.This paper firstly introduces the evolution of mobile communication system especially the developing trends of hardware platforms in wireless communication base station. Then, this paper looks into the features and key technologies of IMT-Advanced communication system, and analyzes the computing complexity, transmission throughput requirement and storage requirement based on the characteristics of 4G system's signal processing algorithms. Based on these requirements this paper designs a hardware platform that guarantees the system's performance. The main efforts are taken to illustrate two important part of this hardware platform. First is the architecture design of the system, including the design of interconnection as well as the selection of signal processors. The other is the design of general signal processing module in the platform, including the design of processors' circuitry, the design of all the daughter cards' interface and the design of signal integrity.In this platform, ATCA, high performance FPGA and high speed serial transmission technologies are used, which represent the developing trends of the industry.
