With the rapid development of computer science and information technology, modern distance education in China has greatly stimulated the progress of Chinese education, pushing forward the paces in the construction of "lifelong education system" and "lifelong learning society". Suffering from constraints of time, space, costs and many other aspects, traditional experiment education poses great challenges in improving its efficiency to those education conductors and governors. The emergence of virtual experiment provides an effective solution to this problem. However, the stand-alone mode of most current virtual experiments leads to the lack of teaching process management. Nevertheless, Web-based virtual experiment teaching system successfully gets over such problem and brings remarkable improvements of teaching practices. Due to the detailed analysis on the virtual experiment practices in the distance education of both domestic universities and abroad, this paper summaries the definition, development patterns, classifications and the related features of virtual experiment system. Besides, general theory basis of virtual experiment application is also provided.On the basis of the analysis and summarization of Distance Education Theory, Distributed Cognition Theory and Constructivism Learning Theory, this article applies the Distance Learning Group Theory to the design of virtual experiment teaching system, and proposes virtual experiment learning group module in distance education. There is detail introduction about virtual experiment teaching system environment of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, which is used to do research on the teaching effectiveness and practical application of virtual experiment teaching system in distance education.According to the characteristics of virtual experiment, this paper uses case teaching approach in order to obtain numerous of indicators as quantified responses to learning effectiveness, which could be quantified in the virtual experiment teaching. After studying the course of "Computer Communication Network" case teaching for one semester, the paper gives assessments of the teaching effectiveness of virtual experiment teaching system in distance education, which could provide an accurate reference to the evaluation of virtual experiment learning system in the future.In order to achieve a better analysis of the virtual experiment practices, this paper designs questionnaire according to the attitude, interest and learning experience effectiveness of the students in the virtual experiment teaching system, for the investigation of present using situation of the system. Moreover, this paper analyzes current main problems of virtual experiment teaching system, and proposes constructive suggestions. Analysis shows that auxiliary learning process based on virtual experiments considerably improves the experiment conditions and the innovation capabilities of the students.
