Geographical information system is one of rising courses, which is combined with computer science, information science, modern geography, remote sensing science, environmental science, spatial science and management science. It is also a computer technological system, which is based on geospatial database, and applying geographical model analyzing methods to serve for geographical research and geographical decision-making.With the development of the third generation's telecommunication network, wireless network planning is urgent to need geographical information system. Because digital map provides network planning with basic platform, and the analyzing function of GIS provides linkage calculation and coverage prediction with effective means. In the paper, the main research contents are GIS'current situation and role playing in the wireless network planning. The research method is brief introduction, as well as programming implementation. The research achievement is developing a concrete geographical information system for network planning. Firstly, this article introduces basic conceptions and functions of GIS and wireless network planning. Secondly, this paper presents GIS'application in the telecommunication, especially in the wireless network planning. Thirdly, taking the Unet planning software for a example, this paper elaborates the design and development of geographical information system. In the end of this article, based on the directX, we successfully implement the display of three-dimensional map, and look three-dimensional geographical system applied in network planning into the future.
