From 1975 when Honeywell released the first DCS to now when FCS is widely used, Distributed Control system became a mature technology in the past 35 years. Fieldbus Control System based on an open standard is a new technology, but recently it is a hotspot in the industrial control domain because of its open standards, distribution and interoperability. Various devices from different manufacturers are integrated in Distributed Control systems, especially in FCS. so interoperability between those devices is essential. This paper analyzes the causes to uninteroperability after concludes its definitions. Classifications and measurements. Then implementing methods of device description developed by many main protocol organizations are introduced to find out shortcomings of traditional device description technologies. According to characteristics of Extensible Markup Language, XML is proposed to be used in device description technology. Referring to FF, study on FF device description based on XML is accomplished. The paper created XML device description documents and it's DTD. XML documents sharing and field devices remote accessing methods are preliminarily explained after the documents is successfully parsed and configuration method is given.
