To apply the XML technology for solving the fieldbus interoperability is a direction of the technical development. This paper studies fieldbus interoperability and its application. The purpose is to realize fieldbus interoperability at sensor level. Its practical implementation is conducted by the application of HART and CAN.On the basis of the fieldbus interoperability analysis and introduction of XML technology, an interoperable solution is proposed between monitoring devices and fieldbus devices. The interoperability of heterogeneous fieldbus devices is also discussed. The solution proposed for fieldbus interoperability is applied in a monitoring system of well drilling. After providing requirement of system design, principle and design method, the whole system is designed. It is necessary to solve the interoperablity problem in HART and CAN fieldbus devices. Fieldbus interoperability is realized in a HART fieldbus system. The main steps are as follows: the HART device description based on XML, the parse of HART device description file, the device registration and management, the implementation of configuration and application function based on the application layer of HART protocol. The hardware and software of master and slave nodes are developed respectively in order to implement an CANopen fieldbus system. Why the CANopen is selected is explained. The implementation of interoperability based on the XML for CANopen devices is addressed.Experiments are conducted to verify the system design.
