As the shipping industry's rapid development, the port fairway's capacity and port's scheduling is becoming more and more important. So, the fairway's widening,deepening and other new problems turn out. The organization of vessel flow, navigation safety and many other problems should be considered when we improve a fairway's capacity. Before the fairway widening, the scientific planning and design are very important, but they can not do everything well. Therefore, it is necessary to use modern simulation technology in the analysis of the vessel traffic flow. The simulation model could be based on the rational fairway capacity calculation models and the fairway's character.MultiGen Creator which is developed by the MultiGen company, is one of the best three dimensional modeling software. It has high fidelity, low consumption of resources. It can be updated in real time and used in the different design of real-time interactive applications. Therefore, this paper selects MultiGen Creator to design the three dimensional models, and takes ships, ports as examples to research the modeling design methods. Firstly, the paper discusses how to use satellite data to make terrain model. Secondly, the paper uses the TCT (Terrain Culture Triangulation) algorithm to convert the terrain, so it can make the model of rivers, roads and other terrain features more realistic. Because the data from satellite are not accurate enough, the paper uses the CAD and data from other resources to modify the models of ships, building, sea waves etc.The paper researches the simulation principle and methods of Vega which is used for virtual reality simulation. Based on the ships, ports and the other Open Flight files, this paper take a domestic port as an example to simulate the traffic flow, that is integrated with port fairway characteristics of vessel traffic flow. Visual C++ MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes) is used as a framework to develop a vessel traffic simulation system. The system simulates the ocean, waves, sky, clouds, light and other envtironment effect realistically. Through the orderly combination and utilization of the above effects, it can simulate the ship navigation in different visibility, different sea states and so on. The initial data such as vessels' positions, velocities, routes can be set before the simulation. The perspective can be changed and other parameters can be adjusted in the simulation. These adjustments can achieve different traffic flow simulation in different conditions, and make a better human-computer interaction.Finally, this paper uses the simulation system to simulate vessel traffic flow in a given port. Other than numerical simulation and two dimensional simulation, the paper explores a way to using three-dimensional simulation in the vessel traffic flow simulation to achieve a better fidelity effect.Through the above study, it concludes that three dimensional virtual reality simulation in the vessel traffic flow has obvious advantages such as interactive, real-time, fidelity, fast etc. It can provide the useful information for the fairway widening, port construction. It can playback an accident when collision detection technology is used.
