For one century's period, speech information has been transmitted on the telephone network all over the world using circuit-switch technology. With the rapid development of computer technology,' especially the rapid use of computer networks based on packet-switch technology, man urgently hope to transmit speech information on this digital networks based on packet-switch technology. However the packet-switch network was originally designed to transmit data information, there are great difference between data information and speech information, which are: First, data information is bursty while speech information is continuous bit flow; second, speech flow has a stringent requirement for delay. So there are a lot of problems in transmitting speech information on packet-switch networks. At the same time there are many solutions to these problems, among which the B-ISDN based on ATM cells switch technology is one. Although the ATM technology is not perfect, it surely is a good way to transmit all type of information on the same networks.Whatever using circuit-switch or packet-switch technology to transmit speech information, we all need to model the traffic flow to analyze the transmitting performance of networks, make sure the QoS of traffic and utilize the network resource efficiently in study of network management and network switch technology. In order to analyze and evaluate the performance of transmission technology of packet voice flow and design network, which fitted stringent delay requirement for speech information and other QoS requirement, it is very necessary to give the speech flow transmitted on the communication networks a mathematic model. The paper firstly introduces the study contents and methods of communication traffic, transmission scheme and technology of speech information on communication networks. Then it presents the traffic's mathematic models and its characteristics. Considering the transmitting characteristics of packet voice on ATM switch networks, the paper mainly deal with fundamental principles, characteristics and modeling mechanism of two important traffic models of modern networks, which are Markov modulated Poisson process and fluid flow model. At last by applying the two models and coding the Matlab programs, simulations and analysis of transmitting performance of packet voice flow on the ATM networks are done and some practical and meaningful conclusions are drawn.
