The economic prosperity of our country leads to the rapid increase of automobile. And relative decreasing road capacity cannot meet the demand of economic development and traffic problem becomes one of the key factors that greatly confines economic development. Intersection areas, the bottleneck of the traffic capacity, always has more traffic accidents. Thus scientific management and assessment on intersection areas, which ensure the traffic capacity and security of drivers, are the effective way to solve the traffic problem. Computer simulation provides a new way to the research on traffic flow in intersection areas. Simulation system of traffic flow in city signal intersection areas, a subsystem of city traffic simulation system, is an important part of intelligent traffic system. And the result of city road traffic simulation is due to the validity of such simulation system. So the research on intersection areas plays an important role in the city traffic theory and practice. On the basis of fully analyzing several kinds of traffic simulations, a new design and developing way on city traffic simulation system is proposed, to which discrete simulation time, mesoscopic and microscopic simulation are applied. Then simulation model of traffic flow in city signal intersection areas is given after analyzing real conditions of city traffic system and researching on intersection areas by object-oriented method. Car-following theory is usually applied to the research on traffic flow for the particularity of vehicle behavior in intersection areas. Aimed to solve the lack in considering the response time of the drivers in the simulation of micro car-following model, this thesis puts forward an enhanced one, in which we provide a way to identify the road's different regions according to the character of vehicle behavior and a way to calculate the minimum and maximum safe distance of the vehicles according to the characters of intersection areas. In addition, we also give a thorough consideration on the influence which the driver response time brings to the velocity and the acceleration of the vehicles. Finally the validity of the refined model is proved through the simulation of car-following model.
