Wireless sensor technology is widely used in the industrial monitoring field due to its mobility, low energy consumption and high flexibility. The thermal characteristic of machine tools spindle, the quality of wireless communicating and the consumption of the whole measuring system are analyzed. Based on that, a new kind of wireless temperature monitoring system is developed in order to overcome the limitation of traditional wire temperature sensor. The background and significance of the research are first introduced. The development trend and the current research situations of wireless sensor technology, temperature monitoring method are expatiated, and then the study contents of this dissertation are proposed. The key points that can linearly reflect the thermal deformation of spindle are searched by analyzing the temperature characteristic of machine tools. After that, a kind of sensor deploy strategy that take advantage of the metabolic distance between two adjacent nodes is proposed, which enables the wireless monitoring system working for a long time. Then the communicating efficiency under various circumstances is analyzed by simulation. Finally, an optimal sensor deploy strategy is proposed applying wireless network to machine tools. In this work, a temperature monitoring system based on wireless sensor technology has been designed and realized. To overcome the challenge of real time temperature monitoring on a rotating spindle, the develop process of the whole system in detail, from IC component selection to software design. Finally, the temperature monitoring system with optimal sensor deploy is verified by experiments. The platform is composed of wireless temperature monitoring system, traditional temperature monitoring system, laser displacement sensor, and CNC machine tools. The main features include:comparison of dropped package percentages among different kinds of sensor deploy, least-square modeling with temperature data retrieved by the proposed wireless system and traditional sensing system, comparison of thermal induced displacement data retrieved by laser sensor and the modeling result from the two sensing system above. It is clearly shown that the proposed method produces better data transmission efficiency, and the wireless sensor system is proved to be consistent and robust.
