China has for the first time surpassed the United States as the world's number 1 automobile producer and seller in 2009. Its automobile industry has achieved great success with global attention due to rapid development of domestic automobile industry in recent years. The rapid development of automobile industry also contributed to the rapid development of automotive electronics industry. Vehicle-mounted Computer as the highest tech products has also been shifted gradually from the previous high-end markets only towards the low end. However, most of China's VMC market share is dominated by the Europe, the United States and Japan while the domestic VMC has been at a disadvantage position due to lack of strong technical support and independent intellectual property rights. It has been imperative for us to develop a highly integrated VMC system with fully independent intellectual property rights for the consumers.VMC development is a comprehensive project. The first task is functional orientation to set up its functions before the design for the project, and then perform analysis of these functions to select the appropriate implementation methods and means. We establish feasible design schemes after comprehensive assessment of these methods and means.The main functions of VMC concentrate in the leisure and entertainment, auxiliary driving and vehicle status monitoring. Recreational functions include video player, music player, mobile TV, Internet, radio, in-car Bluetooth and so on. Auxiliary driving function consists of constant speed cruise, GPS navigation, reverse imaging and so on. Vehicle status monitoring functions are composed of status of engine, transmission status, fuel status, tire pressure status, etc.This thesis selected a hardware development platform based on Au1250 processor after careful comparison between several embedded processor platform design and implementation programs in order to meet this project's requirements on high performance and low power consumption. The final choice of operating system is Windows CE after analysis and comparison on the current mainstream embedded operating system-Windows CE and embedded Linux with comprehensive consideration on functional requirements, power consumption, price, product development cycles, etc. When the overall design of the structure is established based on the Au1250 processor and Windows CE embedded operating system, the specific task of the project is divided into three parts:1) hardware design, which is divided into CPU and peripheral circuit design, storage circuit design, external device circuit design and extends equipment circuit design. The overall design took the Au1250 processor as a core and made the best use of Au1250 processor's own function modules, while function that the processor does not have was extended on FPGA expansion peripherals.2) Operating system development, according to VMC project functional requirements and features, a suitable VMC Windows CE operating system is built via adding corresponding module components to generate an operating system image. The driver is developed and validated by transplantation of operating system's boot loader and modification of the configuration files.3) Application development, VMC audio and video player is developed. In addition, user interface specifically for vehicle computer is designed. Finally, we analyzed the entire project development process and summed up the achievements and problems to forecast the next steps of design work.
