Vehicle Monitoring System (VMS) has been researched since 1970s, which integrates global satellite positioning (GPS) technology, modern mobile communication technology, with geographic information systems technology. It not only plays an important role in intelligent transport system, but also provides anti-theft alarm, emergency medical assistance and other services. However, the communication part of the VMS which is based on the GSM and GPRS wireless data transmission can not meet the real-time requirement because of Low bandwidth when transmit image data. Therefore, the high-bandwidth WCDMA is a future development direction in VMS. In this paper, a new scheme of the embedded vehicle control terminals is proposed based on ARM-VxWorks platform and WCDMA data transmission technology.First, related technologies such as GPS positioning technology, image compression technology, and WCDMA wireless network technology are introduced. Then the terminal software and hardware platforms of VMS are designed based on the overall demand analysis. On the hardware side, the resource-rich processor S3C2410A, GPS module, WCDMA module, and the image acquisition module are employed. Moreover, the hardware interface circuit of the system is detailly designed. On the software side, the cross-development environment is established, and then the GPS position signal reading and processing module, USB host driver stack loading and transplant module, image collecting and processing module, WCDMA data transmission module are designed respectively. Finally, the system is tested and further study and research are discussed.Collection and transmission of the GPS positioning data and image data can be eventually achieved through terminals based on GPS / WCDMA. The vehicles can be monitored real-time and the accident information can be accessed in time using the information from the terminals. The advantages of the S3C2410A processor resources and the WCDMA network high-bandwidth are fully adopted to achieve low-cost and reliable vehicle monitoring capabilities.
