Spatial Data Warehouse is an application of data warehouse in Geographic Information System. The integration between spatial data and data warehouse is not well resolved and the research on Spatial Data Warehouse is still in the exploratory, because there is a big lack of understanding on the concept, characteristics, theme, granularity and data organization of spatial data warehouse. This paper is relied on the design and the construction of spatial data warehouse for national 863 plans project.At first this paper debates the concept, characteristics and sixty-four-dollar question of data warehouse. And then, this paper compares spatial data with data warehouse, discovers the shortages existed in concepts of spatial data warehouse, discusses the nature of spatial data warehouse on dataset, demonstrates the characteristics of spatial data warehouse on spatial theme, multiple integrated data granularity, organization by spatial theme area and spatial temporal consistency and explains the purposes of spatial data warehouse on supporting data analysis, deep-level data mining and management decision-making. Basing on characteristics of spatial data warehouse and combining the data warehouse, this paper studies the key areas in spatial data warehouse design-the choice of single spatial theme and correlative spatial theme, the dual data granularity, the constellation model on data organization and the integrated metadata model for spatial data and spatial data warehouse elements. Following the theoretical study and model design, this paper designs the general framework of data warehouse system from data stream, the modular model from the function, the composition model and organization model of fact tables and dimension tables and the ETL tools, which stands the application point of view. Finally, based on above theories and technologies, this paper provides the spatial data warehouse system on Southeast Asia forest resources, which lays out the system's overall structure, function menu design, the generation of themes and granularity, the creation of fact tables and dimension tables, the data organization model, the metadata model and ETL tools, to verify the theoretical correctness and technical feasibility.This paper enriches the theory of spatial data warehouse, improves the key areas in the design of spatial data warehouse, completes the construction of spatial data warehouse system of Southeast Asia forest resources, promotes the intelligent geographic information system and provides a viable solution for the growing needs of spatial decision-making. There is an innovation in this paper, which is the concept of associated spatial theme and the viewpoint on granularity. Innovation of this paper is to propose the concept of and the view of multiple integrated data granularity. The problem on the selection of correlative spatial theme and the definition of low granularity is resolved by weighting by step. The concept and the viewpoint tally with the frame of data warehouse, which solves the integration between spatial data and data warehouse.
